East Cambridgeshire Crematorium Moves into Stage 4 Technical Phase
We are excited to share an update on our design for a new crematorium in East Cambridgeshire, as the project progresses into the Stage 4 technical phase. This thoughtful development, commissioned by East Cambridgeshire District Council, will transform a disused site between Mepal and Chatteris into a serene and uplifting environment.
Nestled on a former outdoor education facility, the site boasts a stunning natural setting. With a lake at its heart, surrounded by sandy beaches and tree-lined edges, this area has been untouched since the 1990s. Our design draws inspiration from this unique woodland landscape and the iconic Mepal bridge crossing, blending harmoniously with the environment.
The new crematorium will feature carefully integrated structures, with raised access walkways connecting various parts of the building. This approach ensures minimal disruption to the natural surroundings while enhancing accessibility and aesthetics.
The crematorium’s layout has been designed to offer a seamless and calming journey for visitors. Key components include:
• Crematory Hall
• Main and Side Chapels
• Waiting Areas
• Office Spaces
• External Landscaped Spaces
The buildings are connected by flat-roofed links and a covered canopy at the entrance of the main service hall. Each area serves a distinct purpose, guiding visitors gently through the sequence of spaces – from the welcoming waiting area to the chapel for services.
Our design prioritises creating a space that is not only functional but also comforting and inclusive. High levels of natural light, fresh air, controlled acoustics, and breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscape contribute to a reflective and hopeful atmosphere. These elements combine to offer a sense of peace and tranquillity for all who visit.
This project marks an important step in providing the local community with a facility that respects its natural setting while meeting contemporary needs. We look forward to bringing this vision to life and creating a space that supports solace, remembrance, and hope.
