Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium
We are thrilled to share that we are working on our first international crematorium.
Benchmark Architects, in collaboration with Vefeades & Vefeades Architects, is proud to be leading the design of the first crematorium in Cyprus. Set to open in Agia Varvara, Paphos, in the summer of 2026, this groundbreaking project offers a dignified and environmentally conscious alternative to traditional burial.
The crematorium will be a state-of-the-art facility, covering 1,012m² within a 17,575m² site, with an estimated construction cost of €4 million. Designed with both functionality and serenity in mind, it will feature two service chapels accommodating up to 200 guests, tranquil memorial gardens, and modern wake facilities. The architectural approach integrates traditional Cypriot materials, such as stone and timber, with contemporary design principles, ensuring a seamless connection with the natural landscape.
Sustainability is at the core of the design, incorporating advanced low-emission cremation technology, continuous air quality monitoring, solar energy solutions, and a rainwater harvesting system to maintain the memorial gardens. Biodegradable urns and other eco-friendly options will further support an environmentally responsible approach to end-of-life services.
Beyond its architectural and environmental considerations, the crematorium addresses a growing need in Cyprus. Until now, families seeking cremation services had to travel abroad, facing logistical and financial challenges. This new facility provides a local, regulated, and transparent solution, ensuring accessibility for all funeral homes and individuals choosing cremation.
Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium Limited is committed to supporting the local economy by sourcing materials and expertise from Cypriot professionals. Informational sessions will also be held to educate the public on cremation as an end-of-life option, promoting awareness and understanding within the community.
This pioneering project not only sets new standards for funeral services in Cyprus but also represents a thoughtful balance of innovation, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity. Benchmark Architects is honoured to contribute to a space that provides comfort, respect, and choice for families during life’s most delicate moments.
